Bracken glanced over at her, his face glowing orange from the fire. Practically everything was completely covered with darkness from the setting sun, and he could tell the air was getting cold. Thankfully he had the fire to keep him warm. "Thanks for sharing this with me," he said gratefully, turning his head back to the crackling fire. It was tough to tell that it had once been an entire chair.

Amelia grinned watching the pattern of shadows and orange light on his face. "I'm glad to. These days I'm glad to have company." She shivered. Despite the fire, it was getting chilly. Goosebumps crawled up her hands and neck. A chill crept up her spine and shivered violently. She scooted closer to the fire, pulling her leg out of it. She peeled back the hot meat to check for pinkness. Hers was a light brownish color and looked perfect. "Ch-check yours."

Bracken grinned at her stuttering, briefly wondering if his speech impediment was contagious. He pulled out the leg and peeled it open a little, noticing it was perfectly done. "Perfect," he commented, taking a bite out of it. The smokey flavor filled his mouth, and he couldn't help but grin at the taste. Once he swallowed, he glanced over at her. "Yeah, I d-don't really f-find people th-that much," he explained shakily. "Well, p-people who don't w-want to kill me,"

Amelia couldn't help but smile. "Why kill someone who's already lost the fight." She gave a small wink, laughing. "I don't take pride in killing the helpless." Her teasing lightened her mood. she felt more like her old self. The self she'd been before grey, white-eyed cannibals had eaten her family. Her shoulders hunched a bit at the thought. She fell silent and took a bite of her cat leg. It was smokey and savory. It was hands down the best thing she'd eaten in a long time.

Bracken gave out a little guffaw. It was the fall of humanity, and most people had given up on pride. People would kill others just to take their things, or just to eliminate competition. He began to feel guilty. He wasn't spotless when it came to a track record. Sometimes he would get a little trigger tender, and accidentally shoot down people he would see without even checking if they were friendly or not. But he tried to avoid that, and if it did happen, he wouldn't even loot their corpse.

Despite everything, Amelia took a rare kind of joy from his reaction. Something she hadn't felt in so long. Was it selfish to wish she could stay here in front of the fire with her new friend and just talk safely for the rest of their miserable lives? Was it so much to ask of God? If God was there, why was he so cruel? She had grown up in the Bible-Belt. They worshiped him growing up and went to church three and sometimes four nights a week. she did everything she in the church. She sang every Sunday in her choir and sang every Wednesday alone in front of the church. What kind of God had she worshiped that he'd let this happen? Was it all a lie, a fairytale devised by ancient assholes to give mankind hope? Well, hope wasn't helping now.

Bracken continued to eat the cat leg, cleaning it off quickly. His history was similar to Amelia's, though a bit different. He had grown up in a religious family. But after they had been infected, and he looked his father in the eyes as he beat him to death, he began to lose faith. He knew his father wasn't dead when he did it. But his father wasn't... his father. The whole experience confused him, and he hated to be confused.

Amelia sighed, forcing herself to keep eating. Her appetite was gone, but she knew she needed the energy the food would give her. She polished off the bone a few minutes after him. She stared up at the stars. "It's hard to think this city used to be so bright that ti blotted out the stars." She sighed staring up at the bright beauties twinkling over head. Her heart actually ached at the thought.

Bracken looked up into the sky, the stars twinkling in his eyes. "Kinda funny how the infection made everything awful," he said, leaning back and laying down on the cold ground. "Yet beautiful," he noted, closing his eyes.

(( Running out of juice. xD ))
Amelia only nodded. Thoughts crawled around the inside of her mind as she laid back onto the concrete staring at the stars, her dark brunette hair falling all around her. "It's sad, the things we've lost as Humans...."

(( It's starting to get late X3 ))
Bracken nodded, though he knew she wasn't looking at him to notice. "We've lost humanity itself," he mumbled sadly. He had tried his best to keep his humanity even if it was one of the last things he had left.

"We've lost EVERYTHING that made us Human. We've lost compassion, empathy, we've even lost compassion for family. One turns into a zombie? Whack em in the head. I'm not saying we shouldn't, but some don't think twice. We don't have consciences anymore. We may as well be zombies for all the Humanity we possess." Amelia felt a tear slide down her cheek. She mourned for the destruction of humanity; how could she not?

Bracken sighed, rolling over to face away from her. That was just like him. He didn't think twice when he killed zombies. He would just hack and slash his way through everything. He felt guilt wash over him. Truthfully, humans had just been sheared down to their bare instincts. And that's what made them so dangerous.

"Bracken? I didn't mean..." She stopped, more tears falling down her cheeks. "See, we are heartless beings." She cried, her eyes reddening from the tears. "I don't want to be here anymore." She whimpered.

Bracken immediately rolled over to face her. "No, p-please don't leave," he begged quickly. He blushed a little as he realized how strange it probably looked. "I don't want to be alone," he muttered, falling onto his back.
